Word of the Week Wednesday: Lackadaisical

Lackadaisical: (adj.) lacking energy; listless; lazy.

Lackadaisical is one of those really fun words to say, that uses several back-of-your-throat consonants reminiscent of when you've got something stuck back there.

It has an interesting origin, stemming from the English interjection alas! or alack! It is an alteration of the phrase alack-the-day. It perhaps developed its current meaning through the influence of the word lax, meaning loose.

The word brings to mind couch potatoes or a person who may be sort of, um, lazy. But when balanced with some hard work, being lackadaisical really doesn't have to be a bad thing.

For instance, perhaps it is a Friday night and all you want to do is sit around and watch a TLC marathon and avoid the dishes or the laundry. That's perfectly acceptable on occasion.

However, there are certain places that you must not become lackadaisical, such as when you are at work. You don't have to ask your boss to know that being lackadaisical on the job isn't something he or she would be keen on.

An extra fact about this Word of the Week: Next time you call someone a slacker, you can thank the word lackadaisical for that fun slang term.

Since lackadaisical is connected to the word lax, which means loose or slack, an easy connection could be made.

Feeling like a slacker today? That's OK, as long as you don't do it on the job!
