Word of the Week Wednesday: Colloquialism

Colloquialism: a characteristic of informal spoken language.

Colloquialisms are similar to slang, but examples would include phrases like, “ya’ll, gonna, wanna” or subculture terms like, “I’m gonna write on your wall on Facebook.” Common sayings native to specific regions are also colloquial.

For example, depending on the region you live in, any number of colloquialisms could really mean the same thing!

Colloquialisms for the plural of "you."

West coast: "You guys"
Texas: "Ya'll"
Mississippi: "You'uns"
East Coast: "You's"
